How To Enable 'Stereo Mix' & Record Your PC Sound (With Images)

Have you ever felt the need to record the sounds exactly the same as it comes off the speakers? Then enabling 'Stereo Mix' will let you do the same and in this guide, I am going to show you how you can do so.

Most of the sound card out there in the market and in your PC/laptop has the ability to record whatever is being output. But the feature is disabled by default and you manually have to enable this feature i.e. Stereo Mix.

ENABLING STEREO MIX

To enable Stereo Mix, you will have to open the Sound Control panel. You can do so in two ways:

1. Head over to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording Tab

2. Right-click on the 🔊 (Audio Icon) in the System Tray and click on the 'Open Sound Setting'. Then click on the 'Sound Control Panel' in the Right Panel, then go to Recording Tab.

In the Sound Control Panel, right-click on the blank area in the pane and make sure that both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" are checked. Then you should be able to see the "Stereo Mix" option in the pane.

Right-click on the 'Stereo Mix' To Enable it.

STILL DON'T SEE IT?

Sometimes your audio chipset drivers aren't in your favor. The reason could be because they are outdated. Or the other possibility is that the newest chipset drivers don't support this feature. If you have the newest chipset driver installed and you really want to enable this feature, then install the older version of the chipset drivers, while on the other hand, if you haven't updated your drivers in the past years and you don't see this option, then it is the right time to update them.

But keep a backup of the current drivers or create a restore point in case anything goes wrong.

HOW TO USE THIS?

With this feature enabled, you should be able to see the option of 'Stereo Mix' in your favorite recording software. But if your software does not allow you to change the microphone device, then you will have to make 'Stereo Mix' your default recording device.

In Windows 10, Stereo Mix is made default device the time you enable it. But in Old Windows, you have to manually set Stereo Mix as your default device.

To do so, Right-click on the Stereo Mix option in the recording tab and select 'Set as Default Device'. This will make it the default recording device.

You can choose Audacity to record sounds or any other software of your choice. This would work for all of them.
